This piece reports on Wikipedia’s new strategy for Artificial Intelligence, paying special attention to a statement released by Chris Albon, the Director of Machine Learning, and Leila Zia, Director and Head of Research at the Wikimedia Foundation. While the larger AI strategy set forth by the Wikimedia Foundation offers insights into the process and alternatives that the Foundation considered before arriving at their current trajectory, Albon and Zia’s short statement crystallizes the principles and values at play in their decision and the nature of Wikipedia’s engagement with the technology.
