About
Hong Liu recently received her PhD degree in Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto (2026), where she researched the reception of early modern tragic theatre in twentieth century critical theory, especially in the early writings of German culture critic Walter Benjamin. Her dissertation is interested in identifying early modern melancholy as a theatrical mode that reveals art’s attempt to represent and make sense of historical trauma. Her work is interdisciplinary in nature and wide ranging in themes, drawing insights from art history, media history, film studies, and the burgeoning field of sound studies.
