About the Group
Public Description
The History, Maps, and Computers (Hímaco) group emerged with the intention of collaborating in the overcoming of this troubling gap, seeking the conditions for the implementation of this technology within the Department of History of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and the Public Archive of the State of São Paulo. Such objectives are inserted into the more general concern of stimulating reflections on the use of digital technologies in the historian's craft, within the scope of the so-called digital humanities, actively participating in the valorization of collaborative work and the free circulation of knowledge.
This initiative is situated within the context of the extraordinary developments in information technologies, where the so-called Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have their utilization becoming increasingly generalized, disseminated, and diversified. Their technological identity resides in the capacity to incorporate the spatial dimension into analyses in which it holds central importance. However, their use in historical investigations is still quite incipient, both in relation to what takes place in various other areas of knowledge, and in contrast to the systematic pertinence of issues linked to space in studies of the past.
