Working in the tradition established by (i.a.) Desrosières, Starr & Alonso, Porter, Hacking, Rose, Crosby, Espeland, and Power, and reviewed in Espeland and Stevens (2008), Diaz-Bone and Didier (2016), Berman and Hirschman (2018), and Mennicken and Espeland (2019), this ad hoc group brings together scholars interested in the social-historical processes through which numbers become attached to phenomena and salient for the discussion, understanding, circulation, valuation, and governance of those phenomena. Emerging from a session held at the 2026 conference of the Canadian Sociological Association, we welcome other scholars, regardless of discipline, to join us.
