In addition, we plan to provide hands-on training and in-person consultation, for those in your organization that would be interested in using the Canadian HSS Commons for a variety of tasks. This more pragmatically oriented part of the event will be tailored to help you or other representatives from your organization learn how to (for example) use the Commons to publish and share your work using a free and open access platform, create collaborative groups and projects, organize events, and more.

SUMMARY:Using the Canadian HSS Commons: Guided Workshop for Scholarly Societies
DESCRIPTION:Who: Canadian scholarly societies in the humanities and social sciences\nWhat: “Using the Canadian HSS Commons: Guided Workshop for Scholarly Societies”\nWhere: York University, Toronto (Accolade West-ACW 106)\nWhen: May 27, 12:30-2:30pm ET\n\nDescription: This workshop will be tailored specifically for Canadian scholarly societies in the humanities and social sciences. Participants will learn how to build community, collaborate, and develop and share publications using the Canadian HSS Commons (https://hsscommons.ca/) (which, as a reminder, is an in-development, bilingual network designed and built for the linguistically, geographically, and culturally diverse community of HSS researchers in Canada). To this end, a collection of training guides will be prepared for this event on topics such as hosting society events, helping researchers in your society publish and share their work using a free and open access platform, creating collaborative groups and projects, and more. These guides and workflows will later be published via the Commons’ open access repository. During the session, participants will have the opportunity to set up groups and projects for their own research communities, freely explore the site’s tools for collaboration and communication, and consult with members of the Canadian HSS Commons team.

SUMMARY:Building Digital Communities in the Humanities and Social Sciences
DESCRIPTION:The pervasiveness of digital technologies and social networking has created unprecedented possibilities for engagement between academic and non-academic communities, including among academics, research partners and stakeholders, students, and interested members of the public. But how might digital research infrastructure—including digital research commons such as the Canadian Humanities and Social Sciences Commons (hsscommons.ca)—support community-building and engagement efforts in Canada, specifically? Join panelists Hannah Paveck (Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences), Julia Bullard (University of British Columbia), Tanja Niemann (Érudit), and Ray Siemens, Alyssa Arbuckle, and Graham Jensen (University of Victoria) for a discussion of how questions of digital access, diversity and inclusion, design, governance, and open access publication might actively inform the development of not-for-profit, community-driven infrastructure at the national level (and beyond).

SUMMARY:Building Digital Communities in the Humanities and Social Sciences: DHSI
DESCRIPTION:This is the third event in the Building Digital Communities in the Humanities and Social Sciences event series. Hosted as part of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI), it will provide academic researchers, information professionals, administrators, students, and members of the interested public with the opportunity to explore how digital research commons can transform scholarly communication, publication, and collaboration.\n \nFeatured speakers will discuss related issues, such as how digital research commons—and research infrastructure more generally—can help advance open, social scholarship in ways that speak to the needs of our communities.\n \nParticipants will also gain hands-on experience and training on the not-for-profit, academic-run Canadian Humanities and Social Sciences Commons (hsscommons.ca). This digital research commons is a hub for open social scholarship, combining elements of social network sites, tools and platforms for collaboration, and institutional repositories to serve the linguistically, geographically, and culturally diverse community of HSS researchers in Canada and beyond.
