Transcription Challenge Framework

The Transcription Challenge Framework (TCF) is a sustainable scholarly model organized to support and promote collaborative transcription of digitized handwritten materials, including manuscripts from all time periods. TCF leadership issues an annual call for projects to sponsor two transcription events per year, supervised by our Advisory Board and supported by our tech partners, FromThePage. Transcription events follow the TCF workflow, and all project data is catalogued and preserved at partner repositories for long term access, citation, and preservation. Come explore texts with us, build scholarly networks, and share your love of transcription!

Taiwan Shakespeare Database

The Taiwan Shakespeare Database is an open-access online archive of Taiwan’s Shakespearean productions with both English and Chinese interfaces. It casts theatre works in historical and cultural context, presenting not only streaming video of performances with bilingual subtitles but also production background, interviews, publicity materials, designs, photos, news coverage, reviews, essays, and more. Data is annotated in English and Chinese: each production comes with a concise introduction and related materials are given a brief abstract too.

The Database constitutes a useful tool for researchers, teachers, and students alike. The Database is an ongoing project. Application tools for teaching and research are also being developed.

Six Degrees of Francis Bacon

Six Degrees of Francis Bacon is a digital reconstruction of the early modern social network that scholars and students from all over the world can collaboratively expand, revise, curate, and critique. Unlike published prose, Six Degrees is extensible, collaborative, and interoperable: extensible in that people and associations can always be added, modified, developed, or, removed; collaborative in that it synthesizes the work of many scholars; interoperable in that new work on the network is put into immediate relation to previously studied relationships.

Shakespeare’s Words

Shakespeare's Words was published in 2002 by Penguin Books. Although it was one of the largest books Penguin had ever published (almost 700 pages), we were unable to include in it more than a small set of references to the various plays and poems in which the words are found. As the book became known, and increasingly used, we therefore began to think of an online website in which we could include every instance of a word and which would help users to search through the database easily.

Selden Map of China

This is one of the first Chinese maps to reach Europe. It came into the Library in 1659 from the estate of the London lawyer John Selden, who must have acquired it by 1653 at the latest, as in a codicil to his will dated that year he describes the Map and an accompanying compass as having been “taken both by an englishe comander”.
